Name and place of institution
Conservatorium Maastricht (CM), Maastricht, the Netherlands.
This module is offered by CM in collaboration with the Toneelacademie Maastricht/Academy of Performing Arts; both are part of Zuyd University of Applied Sciences.
Period of the EOA module in 2017-2018
April - May - June 2018
Description of the module
New developments within the art form of opera. Not mere reproduction. Existing opera repertoire in a contemporary setting with singers and actors sharing the stage. Conceptual thinking, improvisation, physical acting, choreography. Development of theatre personality, training diversity of thinking and working with specific set design. Musicians as makers.
Repertoire: Les Brigands by Jacques Offenbach
The text of the opera will be in German (Die Banditen) and a new present-day version!
"Les Brigands requires singing, speaking, acting and dancing on equally high level. Therefore I see this opéra bouffe as an 'ancient musical' "
[Dominik Wilgenbus, director]
Open for applicants regarding the following:
- Falsacappa (tenor)
- Piétro (tenor)
- Up to 2 conducting students (in addition to 2 CM conducting students)
The module is divided into two parts: training and production. During the first 6 weeks, vocal students train within the Toneelacademie Maastricht/Academy of Performing Arts curriculum with additional, specific input from the CM. During the last 6 weeks, actors and singers work towards 4 / 5 performances of a new production, fully staged with orchestra accompaniment.
As this production has many roles there is a lot of working to do in preparing and rehearsing. Both Federico Santi (conductor) and Jeremy Hulin (operarepertoire-coach/conductor) will work with (up to) 4 conducting students and the conducting students also get to work in the rehearsals with the orchestra (possibly can conduct a performance as well).
