Opera in the Making

April/May/June 2019
communication languages EN/GE

New developments within the art form of opera. Not mere reproduction. Existing opera repertoire in a contemporary setting with singers and actors sharing the stage. Conceptual thinking, improvisation, physical acting, choreography. Development of theatre personality, training diversity of thinking and working with specific set design. Musicians as makers.

This year a new format starts: we remember the original restaurant/bar/cabaret in Paris in the roaring twenties, Le Boeuf sur le Toit, gathering all kinds of fantastic musicians and other artists of that era, and we love that it is a place where artists and fellow night-people drink, talk and sing together. Anyone can jump on stage any moment, for an act which expresses love for life. Or just love. Is this world in itself artificial, or is it larger than life?

Open for applicants regarding the following:

1 or 2 singers from the EOA can participate, next to our own singing and acting students.
When applying, know that you will be challenged to bring your own repertoire, and, in production, discover ways to present it in this special place, thus creating your role

Michel Sluysmans, artistic leader of Toneelgroep Maastricht
Rob Ligthert, dean of Toneelacademie Maastricht

“The night café as habitat. People come in to forget what’s outside. Here it is safe, time is not running, nothing makes this world go ‘round, so they can sing and play their lives, in arias and acts, in images and poetry…”
