ANT 2. Repetiteur training in Mozart’s Don Giovanni

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021:

January – February – March 2021

Only available for students from ERASMUS+ partner institutions (3 months)

Description of the module: W.A. Mozart: Don Giovanni

This module offers 1 pianist specific training as repetiteur, aimed at pianists aspiring to work in opera. This experience will take place in the stimulating environment of the deSingel Arts Campus. Ideal for a pianist with limited prior experience in opera, this module includes:

  • Observing the production process from beginning to end, which includes attending all musical and scenic rehearsals, recitative coachings and rehearsals, individual coachings of the cast, as well as related voice lessons.
  • Weekly lessons with the resident professor of collaborative piano on the relevant materials, focusing on developing the skills of a repetiteur: singing while playing, preparing the score musically/pianistically for rehearsal, developing a deeper understanding of vocal technique in order to effectively coach singers, coaching, working with conductor and director.
  • Italian language coaching along with cast members.
  • Lessons with the resident professor of continuo playing on recitatives.
  • While the current Master students at the Royal Conservatory Antwerp will be the official continuo players (on fortepiano) for the production, and the professor of collaborative piano will in general play the tutti musical and scenic rehearsals, the EOA-pianist will lay all chorus rehearsals, as well as some scenic rehearsals and coachings as merited.
  • The pianist will receive weekly individual feedback, personalized advice and new assignments by the professor of collaborative piano.
  • Lessons advanced keyboard musicianship.
  • Cultural background of opera via a music history module (English).
  • Participants will interact with the regular students of the conservatory.

The goal is to gain an in-depth familiarity with Mozart’s operatic style while simultaneously learning and implementing, under expert supervision, the specialized skills and tools of a repetiteur.

The module is an excellent starting point for a pianist to foster their interest in opera and develop that into a professional ability as repetiteur and coach. Participants will be fully welcomed into the regular student body of the Royal Conservatory Antwerp.

The cultural scene in Antwerp city encourages immersion into the professional international art scene on a daily basis. At deSingel Arts Campus, concerts and presentations by major musicians, theatre and dance companies intermingle with lessons, bridging the gap between student life and profession.

In addition, the music department is strongly connected with Opera Ballet Vlaanderen: Don Giovanni conductor Jan Schweiger is chorus master for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, while professor of collaborative piano Jeanne-Minette Cilliers was a long-time repetiteur on the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen staff.

Jeanne-Minette Cilliers (head of collaborative piano, opera coach, repetiteur) Sabrina Avantario (Italian language coach)
