Period of the EOA module in 2020-21:

January – May 2021 (Term dates: January 11- May 21, 2021)

Open for:

  • 1-3 singer
  • 1-2 composers

Description of the EOA module:

For you as a singer this is a unique opportunitie to take an active part in the composition process and present your voice and its possibilites. You will be asked to present a piece or an aria from any era that you love to sing and is typical for your voice type.

Together BA singers and composers join in discussion and analysis of vocal music repertoire, where the specialist knowledge of each group informs the other. In the second half of the course composers will either – and this will be based on the will and chemistry of the group – be paired up with vocalists to create a new work of vocal music, or, the group will collaboratively create a single work together. By the end of the term, the will be public performances of new music.

This module will also consist of:

  • Voice lessons with a team of voice teachers
  • Performance classes
  • Coaching
  • Public lunchtime recital series managed by students

Possible extras:

  • Dramatic Interpretation classes (2ECTS)
  • Movement classes (2ECTS)
  • Performance of scenes from operas or an entire opera (TBA) (2-10 ECTS)
  • Experimental music ensemble (4ECTS)

For composers a personalised programme of practical courses will be put together depending on students’ needs.

Specialty of this module in comparison with other courses in Europe:

A. For singers

The special feature of this module is to get the chance to work with a composer and take an active part in the creative process. Also to influence and have a discussion about how to write for the voice and about content and context like text or other inspirations for the composition. In the end to perform a piece written especially for your voice. Apart from this you will build your vocal technique and interpretive skills while working with a team of expert voice teachers who work in tandem empowering you to clarify your goals and make your own choices. As well you may make use of the department’s numerous performance opportunities, performing song, oratorio and opera repertoire.

B. For composers:

The composition department has been flourishing in recent years and graduated composers have enriched the music scene in Iceland and abroad. Every student is met where he is at and diversity and individuality is fostered. This makes the department an exciting place for aspiring composers who are interested in collaboration and working with the voice.
