STO 2. Site specific opera performance

Period of the EOA module in 2024 – 2025:

In this module, the singer students explore how working in other venues and spaces than the opera theatre can influence the music-dramatic expression. The students work on selected Opera scenes with a stage director and an opera coach/pianist,  and bring their work into the chosen venue to  stage a performance for a small audience. The students, together with the  teachers,  take an active part in deciding how to use the chosen space and how to place the audience in the performance. The module, besides the stage work in preparation for the performance, includes singing lessons, musical interpretation sessions. It also includes coaching in Italian lyric diction where appropriate to the chosen repertoire. The repertoire is for the performance is chosen in June, in dialogue with the students.

The module can be extended to include the entire term january December with  work on a staged concert with conductor and piano or orchestra.

STO 1. Italian opera scenes – language, expression, communication

Period of the EOA module in 2024 – 2025:

  • 2nd of September-2nd of November 2024 (possible extension to 19/1 2024 for a full term )
  • Open for: 1-3 vocal students

Explore the connections between language, music, acting and movement through scenes from Italian Opera and recitative. You will work with language, musical performance, acting, vocal skills and stage movement in parallel, often with several teachers cooperating in the same session. The module will contain:

  • Investigation of the influence of language on stage thought, action and performance
  • vocal coaching and musical preparation of opera scenes in original language, individually and in group
  • Practical role analysis and stage work
  • Stage movement classes
  • An intensive course focusing on the secco recitative. The course gives methods for preparation, musically and language-wise, as well as methods for achieving spontaneity and meaning in the performance of recitative through improvisational methods
  • Performing arias and select ensembles in a concert with orchestra
  • Performing opera scenes with piano in our studio theatre

The repertoire is selected to suit the students in the course. The repertoire will be discussed and decided in June 2024.

RIG 2. Baroque Opera Studio in Riga

RIG 1. Russian language in opera fragments of Russian composers

Period of the EOA module in 2024 – 2025:

Content:

Russian language phonetics and training in opera fragments of Russian composers /N. Rimski-Korsakov, P. Tchaikovski, S. Prokofiev etc./ together with local students. Daily lessons in Opera studio “Figaro”.

Possibility to participate in rehearsals/performances of “The Queen of Spades” at the National Opera.

Possibility to master Russian language: perception, listening, speaking, reading, communication skills.

In addition EOA students will be offered tailor-made programme:

    POR 2. Performance of an Operatic Role in fully staged Opera Production with orchestra

    Content:

    The module aims for students to work on performing a role and learn to co-operate with conductors, directors and other professional groups through the performances and participation on a fully staged opera.

    The Opera for this year is still in negotiation with the National Theatre of Porto: TNSJ and it will be fully announced soon.

    Specialty of this module in comparison with other courses in Europe

    EOA students will participate in this fully staged work and will receive vocal coaching and acting to prepare the specific roles of this production. It will make the EOA student aware of the full teamwork and cooperation that an opera production requires, and it will make the singer aware of the interaction of all the EOA Modules 2024-2025, and how different areas are involved in an opera presentation (implementation of the set design, costumes, light, production, staging, orchestra, etc.)

    Possible extras: 

    Students may attend one, or both, of these theoretical seminars on the subject of Opera and Performance:

    1. Opera communication systems in history and in actuality: a sociological approach. Seminar given by Prof. Dr. Francisco Melo – Professor of History and Esthetics, at ESMAE
    2. The Psychology of Performance – The underlying psychology to the study of operatic roles and other issues in opera. This Seminar will be given by Prof. Dr. Daniela Coimbra (PhD) – Professor on Psychology of Music, at ESMAE.

    Besides that, Porto is a culturally interesting and beautiful city. Here you can profit from the musical and cultural activity at Casa da Música of Porto, a very active cultural point in the city, as well as the Teatro Nacional de São João, Rivoli Theatre and the Coliseum of Porto.

    POR 1. Preparing Operatic Roles

    Methodology: Improvisation, Movement, Vocality and E-Motion Arousal as a Body and Vocal approach to Opera Singing and Opera Making

    Description of the module: 

    a. Vocal Performance with Technical Supervision 

    The aim of this section of the module is to facilitate vocal improvement through the use of improvisation, movement, emotional arousal accurate vocal technique in accordance with the preparation and performance of specialized operatic repertoire (from Baroque to Contemporary repertoire. Special attention will be given to technical problems, vocal characterization, style and interpretation as well as performance practices. The focus of this module will also be on vocal improvement and on vocal technique within the preparation and performance of operatic roles. The emphasis is on artistry and the process of the vocal training through the preparation of operatic roles). Other genres of vocal repertoire such as Lied, Song and Chanson may also be part of a specialized vocal study. This module has as the goal to enable the student autonomy, both in achieving methodological processes as well as the consolidation of a vocal as well as an artistic identity.

    B. Acting for Singers in the Preparation of Operatic Roles 

    The aim of this section of the module is to facilitate the student’s artistic autonomy both in methodological processes as well as the consolidation of an artistic identity. Through an organization of their knowledge and skills (creative, sensory and cognitive) the student will be able to develop interpretative operatic roles taking in account previous dramaturgic assumptions for the purpose of live performance.

    • Master a variety of techniques of movement and acting.
    • Develop somatic and emotional body-mind approaches to performance practice
    • Increase awareness of the poetic universe of the performer
    • Develop the singular nature of each opera singer during live performance and during collective interaction.

    The main purpose of this module is to consolidate the performer skills, giving a particular focus to the work on stage in the interaction with the director and the maestro. Issues of scenic presence in relation with the scene/stage will also be explored. Scenic experimentation through body movement, improvisation, vocality and the arousing of emotion will bring the student a new approach to Opera and Opera making. This module will enable the student to experience a live performance in front of an audience.

    Gain hands-on experience as a repetiteur in a fully staged opera. Learn the craft under the baton of maestro Federico Santi and work closely together with the conductor and singers during the rehearsal process to gain insight into the life of an opera pianist.

    Description of the EOA module:

    Perform a leading role in an opera. A complete opera production, starting with comprehensive musical rehearsals led by maestro Federico Santi followed by an intensive staging period, and resulting in performances of the complete work with orchestra.

    This module will focus on the cohesion between musical style and stagecraft, allowing for character development from two different perspectives. The final performance should result in a fully realised character, both vocally and acting-wise.

    Open for:

    Min. 2 – Max. 4 singers from the EOA can participate, next to our own singing and acting students.

    LOD 2. Francesco Cavalli – “L’egisto” – Performance of a role in fully staged opera production

    Period of the EOA module in 2025-2026:

    Autumn Semester 2025: October – November 2025

    NOTE: This module is a continuation of LOD 1, and it is planned to happen in the first semester of the academic year 2025-2026. Check with your International Officer whether you will be eligible for Erasmus Grants in the academic year 2025-2026.

    Description of the module:

    Perform a role in a fully staged opera production “L’Egisto” by Francesco Cavalli. Professional training and preparations finalised with complete public performance with orchestra. Considering a short time of training we prefer students with high awarness of a baroque style and very good knowledge of musical material.

    This includes:

    • Vocal coaching (theory of the affects, rhetoric, parlar cantando, performance practices of 17th century, early Italian ornamentation)
    • Acting
    • Language coaching
    • Musical rehearsals with the conductor/harpsichordist and orchestra
    • Stage rehearsals with the stage director.
