POR 2. Performance of an Operatic Role in fully staged Opera Production with orchestra

Content:

The aim of the Module is for students to work on performing a role and learn to co-operate with conductors, directors and other professional groups through the performances and participation on a fully staged opera.

The Opera for this year is still in negotiation with the National Theatre of Porto: TNSJ and it will be fully announced soon.

Specialty of this module in comparison with other courses in Europe

EOA students will participate in this fully staged work and will receive vocal coaching and acting to prepare the specific roles of this production. It will make the EOA student aware of the full team work and cooperation that an opera production requires, and it will make the singer aware of the interaction of all the EOA Modules 2021-2022, and how different areas are involved in an opera presentation (implementation of the set design, costumes, light, production, staging, orchestra, etc.)

Possible extras: 

Students may attend one theoretical seminar on the subject of Opera and Performance:

  • The Psychology of Performance – The underlying psychology to the study of operatic roles and other issues in opera. This Seminar will be given by Prof. Dr. Daniela Coimbra (PhD) – Professor on Psychology of Music, at ESMAE.

Besides that, Porto is a culturally interesting and beautiful city. Here you can profit from the musical and cultural activity at Casa da Música of Porto, a very active cultural point in the city, as well as the Teatro Nacional de São João, Rivoli Theatre and the Coliseum of Porto.

POR 1 A. Preparing Operatic Roles: Vocal Performance with Technical Supervision

Description of the module: 

A.Vocal Performance with Technical Supervision

The aim of this section of the module (considering POR 1A and PORB as a whole) is to facilitate vocal improvement through the use of improvisation, movement, emotional arousal accurate vocal technique in accordance with the preparation and performance of specialised operatic repertoire (from Baroque to Contemporary repertoire. Special attention will be given to technical problems, vocal characterisation, style and interpretation as well as performance practices. The focus of this module will also be on vocal improvement and on vocal technique within the preparation and performance of operatic roles. The emphasis is on artistry and the process of the vocal training through the preparation of operatic roles). Other genres of vocal repertoire such as Lied, Song and Chanson may also be part of a specialised vocal study. This module has as the goal to enable the student autonomy, both in achieving methodological processes as well as the consolidation of a vocal as well as an artistic identity.

PAR 2. Opera buffa in the 18th Century (singers)

Period of the EOA module in 2022-2023

ERASMUS students (SMS and STT) may choose a mobility within one semester (or both):

  • Sprig semester: 3rd week of February 2023 – 30th June 2023

Description of the module:

This module guides the student through a path of vocal and scenic interpretation of one entire opera from eighteenth-century Opera Buffa’s repertoire: Pergolesi, Cimarosa, Paisiello or Rossini (preferably his “Farces in one act”).

  • Analysis, study and full understanding of the libretto(s) and character(s) chosen.
  • Vocal technique and style coaching in Opera Buffa repertoire.
  • Advanced Italian pronunciation and diction classes.
  • Specific lessons on Recitativo.
  • Individual coaching and group work: vocal and score lessons and group work on Scenic Art (Training of the actor’s body, physical and gestural laboratory).
  • Preparation for final exam and concert(s).

Classes will be held in Italian and English.

ERASMUS students have to choose other courses (e.g. Opera History, Poetic and Dramatic Literature, etc.) among those annually proposed by the Conservatory, to reach the total number of required credits.

Special attention will be given to the study of proper Italian diction and pronunciation with native Italian teachers, in building Opera Buffa characters (both scenic and vocal) with full linguistic and stylistic background. Special focus on Recitativo.

    This module offers an entirely specific traineeship for piano accompaniment of voice and opera scenes, designed for pianists who consider a future in the world of opera by adding to their curriculum a first work experience in this various and challenging environment. Trainees will accompany singers on the piano in different settings:

    • singing lessons,
    • scenic interpretation lessons,
    • staging
    • preparation for exams and concerts and during public performances. This always under supervision of a tutor.

    The goal is to improve the knowledge of opera repertoire and to practice the specific skills requested.

    The trainee will receive weekly tasks from the coordinator of piano accompaniment.

    A module for professional pianists who wish to broaden their knowledge of the operatic repertoire in compliance with all the specific attitudes. With a full immersion into Italian opera together with the opportunity to develop the best practice in Italian language applied to opera. OSL 2. Audition training

Content:

During this module we will focus on audition training and the challenges that comes with this. We will arrange several audition training activities with feedback from a jury.

We will also focus on mental training – how to deal with stress and nervousness, and we will talk about the opera business in general:

  • how to get an agency
  • career strategy
  • masterclass

MAA 1. Take the chance to shine on stage: Performing a role in a staged opera

Period of the EOA module in 2022-2023:

January/February/March 2023

Perform a leading role in a staged opera with ensemble.

The title chosen by Conservatorium Maastricht for their 2023 opera production will be announced soon.

Open for:

1 or 2 singers from the EOA can participate, next to our own singing and acting students.

The coaching includes:

  • working with a (professional) conductor
  • a professional stage director
  • individual vocal coaching on style, interpretation and applied technique by our vocal staff.
  • First 6 weeks include 15 hours of training by main subject teachers and opera coach.
  • Next 6 weeks working on the production

The module will conclude with 4 fully staged performances of the opera, accompanied by the ensemble of the Maastricht Conservatorium, in collaboration with Opera Zuid.

LOD 2. Chamber Music Workshop

Description of the module:

Module is dedicated to singers who want to develop their interests in the field of chamber music. Interpretation of a short musical forms as songs or other chamber pieces allows to enhance vocal technique and musical imagination.  The module is based on collaboration of two or more participants working as a duo (singer and pianist) or in a trio (singer, piano and solo instrument/ 2 singers and the pianist) under the direction of prominent artists from the area of cameral music.

A small production takes place at the theatre of the Musikhochschule at the end of the winter semester.

At the end of the summer semester, a big opera production is staged with a professional orchestra and conductor, with a total of 9 performances at the academy’s own theatre (450 seats)

The subject of theatrical and musical performance is taught jointly by the theatrical performance lecturer and the lecturer for role studies. Exchange of views on key issues in music and staging. Interpretation of roles (character development), physical training.
