  • Training and professional preparation of an opera part, concluded with the performance of a fully staged chamber opera production (title to be announced).

REY 1. CAMERATA: Building and perfecting vocal technique and performance through collaboration

Period of the EOA module in 2021-2022:

Description of the EOA module:

CAMERATA Baroque ensemble – Build and perfect your vocal technique and performance skills through collaboration.

This module will consist of:

  • Voice lessons with a team of voice teachers
  • Performance classes
  • Coaching
  • Lunchtime recital series managed by students
  • Collaborative music making with experts in Baroque interpretation leading to a performance of “Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo” bei Emilio de Cavalieri
  • Demanding vocal and instrumental work or programme based on a specified theme with Reykjavík Opera Days. (16 ECTS)*

*For instrumentalist a personalized programme of practical courses will be put together depending on your needs.

VIL 2. Creating the Character in Opera

Period of the EOA module in 2021-2022:

  • 6 intensive weeks during Autumn semester (October, November, 2021)

Description

Purpose of the study module: to master the specifics of creating an operatic character.

Length / frequency: 6 weeks (4-6 contact hours per week)

Components and content:

  1. The principles of the acting theory.
  2. The specifics of acting in opera.
  3. Understanding of and research into the libretto text.
  4. The process of creating a character.

The learning process will be organised in a series of workshop. We will begin with exercises to encourage relaxation and concentration in the creative process; exploring, analysing, and understanding the acting theory in general, and the specifics of application of this knowledge to the individual comprehension of the process. Further, we will move on to creating and performing scenes, monologues, and, finally, arias.

Topics of the module:

•  understanding of what actually acting is;

•  understanding the process of creating a character as a projection or a semiotic paradox;

•  analysis and comprehension of the acting process in the puppet theatre. Acting with an object of the audience perception;

•  the principles of the aesthetics of the Brechtian theatre;                    

•  mask acting, scenes using mask characters;

•  clown acting, principles, exercises, scenes;

•  using voice as a part of the character expression.

Learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the study module, the student will be able to:

    • understand the character as a projection, an object upon which the creative process is imposed;

    • understand the specifics of actor’s transformation into a character;

    •  analyse the libretto text as a source for creating a character;

    •  understand the principles of the research into a character.

Content:

This course offers an opportunity to perform an opera role in a full- scale production with a professional symphony orchestra at a Swedish theatre. The module consists of a period of musical preparation with vocal coaching and musical interpretation sessions, followed by role analysis and stage rehearsals, led by a professional director and conductor. The performance is produced with orchestra, sets, lighting, costume and make up.

The repertoire will be decided in Autumn 2021.

STO 3. Opera Performance with orchestra and conductor

Period of the EOA module in 2021-2022:

  • January 10th -April 13th 2022

Content:

In this module, the student singers work in a production in cooperation with student conductors and musicians from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and a professional stage director.

The project will consist of opera scenes from 2-3 different operas, conceptually merged into one opera performance. The module starts with preparatory work,   musical rehearsals with our teachers in musical interpretation and the conductor students, as well as singing lessons.

The course also contains language coaching, both individually and in group.

A production period of 6-7 weeks follows, consisting of stage work and orchestral rehearsals leading up to a fully staged performance with lighting, costumes and makeup.

Repertoire will be selected in early autumn of 2020.

STO 2. Site – Event – Encounter

Period of the EOA module in 2021-2022:

Autumn semester 2021:

  • August 30th – December 19th 2021 (possible extension to 16/1 2022)

Content:

In this module, the singer students explore how working in other venues and spaces than the opera theatre can influence the music-dramatic expression. The students, together with a stage director, take an active part in deciding how to use the available spaces and how to place the audience in the chosen space. 

The students work on selected scenes with a stage director, and bring their work into the chosen venue, and stage a performance for a small audience. Recently the venue has been the “Reactor Hall” of the Stockholm institute of Technology, an exciting underground former nuclear reactor plant, now a cultural venue for the Institute of Technology.

The module also includes a staged concert with conductor and piano or orchestra.

The module contains singing lessons as well as musical interpretation sessions.

STO 1. Italian Opera scenes: language, expression, communication

Period of the EOA module in 2021-2022:

Autumn semester 2021:

  • 30th of August-19th of December 2021 (possible extension until 16th of January 2022)

Content:

Explore the connections between language, music, acting and movement through scenes from Italian Opera and recitative. You will work with language, musical performance, acting, vocal skills and stage movement in parallel, often with several teachers cooperating in the same session. The module will contain:

  • Investigation of the influence of language on stage thought, action and performance
  • vocal coaching and musical preparation of opera scenes in original language, individually and in group
  • Practical role analysis and stage work
  • Stage movement classes
  • An intensive course focusing on the secco recitative. The course gives methods for preparation, musically and language-wise, as well as methods for achieving spontaneity and meaning in the performance of recitative  through improvisational methods
  • Performing arias and select ensembles in a concert with orchestra
  • Performing opera scenes with piano in our studio theatre

The repertoire is selected to suit  the students in the course. The repertoire will be discussed and decided in June.

Baroque opera studio – joint module in collaboration with Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Baroque opera production in collaboration with the orchestra Collegium Musicum Riga.

RIG 1. Russian Language in Opera fragments of Russian Composers

Period of the EOA module in 2021-2022

  • Autumn semester September 1st – December 23rd, 2021
  • Spring semester    February 1st- June 15th, 2022

Russian language phonetics and training in opera fragments of Russian composers /N. Rimski-Korsakov, P. Tchaikovski, S. Prokofiev etc./ together with local students. Daily lessons in Opera studio “Figaro”.

Possibility to participate in rehearsals/performances of “The Queen of Spades” at the National Opera.

Possibility to master Russian language: perception, listening, speaking, reading, communication skills.

In addition EOA students will be offered tailor-made programme:
