MAA 5. Full scale opera production. Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021

This module is open to:

  • 1-2 orchestra conducting students
  • 1-2 stage director students
  • 1-2 piano students
    • Master students or recent graduates

This module, born from the collaboration between the Maastricht Conservatory and the opera company Opera Zuid, aims to offer students the possibility of assiting the conductor and director or Opera Zuid’s production. They will follow the day to day of a professional production, working on this occasion with:

Working sessions in Opera Zuid will be complemented with sessions in the conservatory with professors of recognized standing and expertise in the field of opera:

Furthermore, Opera Zuid and their business model represent an example of good practices to be known and followed by the opera makers of the future. By creating and touring their own productions around different theatres and cities of the region, like Maastricht, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Den Haag or Breda, among others, this company promotes an entrepreneurial attitude in a cultural environment that is demanding that more and more from the young artists.

In this module, the students will have the opportunity to experience the complete process of creating, developing and implementing an opera production:

  • Ensemble rehearsals, vocal coaching
  • Stage rehearsals
  • Orchestra rehearsals
  • General rehearsal
  • Tour: between 10-12 performances

LOD 1. Performance of an operatic role in an opera production

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021

January – April 2021 (min. 3 months)

Professional preparation of an opera part, concluded with its performance within the framework of the show.

Training and opera production – J. Ph. Rameau – “Platèe”, in concert version

Work on opera performance under the direction of professional conductors prepared to work with soloists, choir, dancers and orchestra

  • different workshops in various ways of singing (classical and musical techniques)

A unique project realised with the accompaniment of a baroque orchestra

Number of teaching / production hours of the EOA module

Working with the stage director – as a group – approx. 20 days of rehearsals (approx. 60 hours)

Ensemble rehearsals with the conductor – 10 hours Stage-orchestra rehearsals – 10 hours

The performance at the concert hall of the Academy of Music in Łódź, at 2a Żubardzka St. – 3 hours

30 ECTS credits

Entrance examination:

Submit recordings. The application must include a link to a video recording (candidate singing with piano accompaniment).

Deadline: November 2020.

Description of the final examination

Location of the show: the concert hall of the Academy of Music in Łódź, at 2a Żubardzka St. or/and The Great Theatre – Opera House in Łódź

Module is available within an Erasmus exchange (SMS or SMP)

Module could be also available as postgraduate studies. The fee is then approx. 2000 EUR (not included travel and living costs).
