Description of the EOA module:

International Opera Creation, Improvisation and Performance Incubator (OCIS) invites singers, composers, music and theatre performers, as well as other artists (directors, visual and media artists, writers, etc.) to develop contemporary opera/musical theatre projects during the period of two intensive weeks in Vilnius in February of 2023.

Two types of applications are open:
a) application for (not necessarily limited to) composers to submit creative contemporary opera/musical theatre ideas, as well as conceptual ideas for co-creation to be developed;
b) application for performers and other artists to work on implementation of innovative music theatre ideas in inter- and multidisciplinary setting.

Applicants are invited to submit original, potent creative ideas and concepts which expand the traditional opera genre boundaries, cross-over into multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts. Participants are expected to be open to co-operation while developing and performing selected creative projects. OCIS welcomes such ideas and projects as (excerpts of) short opera, performing arts production, sound or interdisciplinary installation, contemporary music theatre, musical action, as well as other forms of inter- and multidisciplinary works that expand on artistic expression, explore new ways and spaces, cultural and social contexts, promote innovative communication with audience and similar.                                    

There are no limitations concerning voice types or instruments for performers.

OCIS will provide assistance in concept and creative development, implementation, performance coaching, and production by the team of teachers from The Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, School of Music and Performing Arts, ESMAE P. PORTO, with participation of professionals of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Projects are welcome to make use of music technology if required. Consultation and support will be provided by Music Innovation Studies Centre of the LMTA.

Specialty of this module in comparison with other courses in Europe

Joint module – intensive course (2 weeks) that will be implemented in cooperation of the three higher education institutions – the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, LMTA and ESMAE, with a partnership of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Development and production of the creative projects in the OCIS is unique to the EOA network, it builds on experience of Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership EOALAB and experience of LMTA in developing and running similar projects. Incubator promotes diverse approaches in the context of musical theatre, aims to develop creativity, improvisation, and performance skills, inter- and multidisciplinary cooperation, production and cultural entrepreneurship.

 

It is expected, that after participation in this module, all students:

  • Will have learned about different types/forms of a musical theatre;
  • Will have developed creative and intercultural communication skills;
  • Will be able to demonstrate good communication skills;
  • Will be able to cooperate with a team of international artists by creating, co-creating, rehearsing and presenting artistic projects.

 

It is expected, that after participation in this module, performance students:

  • Will have developed extended performing techniques;
  • Will have developed performing skills and will demonstrate stage presence individually and in a team of interdisciplinary artists.

It is expected, that after participation in this module, composition, directing and production students:

  • Will be able to develop innovative creative interdisciplinary concepts;
  • Will be able to transform a creative concept into a musical-theatrical composition.

Creative project applications (if applicable, free format should be attached during EOA registration. Evaluation takes 2 weeks. Selection will be sent to all applicants.

  • Selected applicants are welcome with support of Erasmus or Nordplus student mobility grants. Exchange students do not pay tuition fee.
  • Fee for non-exchange (free movers) students is 320 Eur.

Students must provide their own accommodation, meals and traveling costs.

VAL 3. Repetiteur training (pianists)

  • From 9th January 2023 to 7th May 2023 (Easter holidays from 6th to 17th April 2023)

Description of the EOA module:

  • Specific training as repetiteur working in the preparation of a fully staged opera production (title to be announced).
  • This includes:
  • Vocal coaching
  • Attending individual voice lessons of the cast
  • Language coaching
  • Musical rehearsals with the conductor and singers
  • Scenic rehearsals with the stage director, conductor and singers
  • Chorus rehearsals with the chorus conductor

STO 4. Full Opera production

Period of the EOA module in 2022-2023:

Spring semester 2023:

  • 21st of February – 4th of June 2023 (possible extension to the whole term-beginning January 16th)

Content:

This course offers an opportunity to perform an opera role in a full-scale production with a professional symphony orchestra at a Swedish theatre. The module consists of a period of musical preparation with vocal coaching and musical interpretation sessions, followed by role analysis and stage rehearsals, led by a professional director and conductor. The performance is produced with orchestra, sets, lighting, costume and make up.

The repertoire will be decided in Autumn 2022.

STO 3. Opera performance with orchestra and conductor

Period of the EOA module in 2022-2023:

  • January 16th – March 19th 2023 (with possible extension to 04/06)

Open for:

  • 1 to 3 vocal students

Content:

In this module, the student singers work in a production in cooperation with student conductors and musicians from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and a professional stage director.

The repertoire for the project will consist of longer excerpts from 2-3 different operas, conceptually merged into one opera performance. The module includes preparatory work, musical rehearsals with our teachers in musical interpretation and the conductor students, as well as singing lessons.

The course also contains language coaching, both individually and in group.

A production period of 6-7 weeks follows, consisting of stage work and orchestral rehearsals leading up to a fully staged performance with lighting, costumes and makeup.

Repertoire will be selected in early autumn of 2022.

RIG 2. Baroque Opera Studio in Riga

Period of the EOA module in 2022-2023:

Baroque opera studio – joint module in collaboration with Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.

Baroque opera production in collaboration with the orchestra Collegium Musicum Riga. Collaboration with professional baroque orchestra. Participation in the intensive concert activities and festivals of early music.

Description of the module

Preparation of an Opera Performance in fully staged Opera Production with orchestra in Porto – Costume, Set and Light Desing

Stage Design is, of course, divided according to specialties (Costume, Set and Light Design), and the aim of each module now offered within each specialty is to facilitate technical and artistry improvement through the use of different and specialised techniques and knowledge, according to the philosophy of building up costumes, sets and light designs within the preparation and performance of specialised operatic repertoire (from Baroque to Contemporary repertoire). The emphasis is on artistry within the process of making an opera. Each year there will be a different Opera Production which will be the aim (Part B) and consequence of this Module development (Part A). This module (within the different specialties now offered) has as the goal to enable the student autonomy, both in achieving methodological processes as well as the consolidation of a Stage Design and an artistic identity. This process will bring the student a new approach to Opera and Opera making, and it will enable the student to experience a live performance in front of an audience.

This Module is only open for those students that have done Part A of the Module and, though, have acquired the knowledge and experience necessary and sufficient to be able to construct costumes, scenery and light designs work for the out coming opera production. Or, for those who can demonstrate through portfolios their ability and knowledge in the construction of costumes, sets and light designs.

EOA students will participate in a fully staged work and will receive vocal coaching and acting to prepare the specific roles of this production. It will make the EOA student aware of the full team work and cooperation that an opera production requires, and it will make the singer aware of the interaction of all the EOA Modules, and how different areas are involved in an opera presentation (implementation of the set design, costumes, light, production, staging, orchestra, etc.)

The Psychology of Performance – The underlying psychology to the study of operatic roles and other issues in opera. This Seminar will be given by Prof. Dr. Daniela Coimbra (PhD) – Professor on Psychology of Music, at ESMAE.

Besides that, Porto is a culturally interesting and beautiful city. Here you can profit from the musical and cultural activity at Casa da Música of Porto, a very active cultural point in the city, as well as the Teatro Nacional de São João, Rivoli Theatrre and Coliseum of Porto.

Stage Design with Technical Supervision (Costume, Set and Light Design)

Stage Design is, of course, divided according to specialties (Costume, Set and Light Design), and the aim of each module now offered within each specialty is to facilitate technical and artistry improvement through the use of different and specialised techniques and knowledge, according to the philosophy of building up costumes, sets and light designs within the preparation and performance of specialised operatic repertoire (from Baroque to Contemporary repertoire). POR 2. Performance of an Operatic Role in fully staged Opera Production with orchestra

Period of the EOA module in 2022-2023:

  • 1st of March to 15th of July 2023

Open for: 1-4 vocal students (Soprano, Mezzo, Tenor, Baritone, Bass)

Content:

The aim of the Module is for students to work on performing a role and learn to co-operate with conductors, directors and other professional groups through the performances and participation on a fully staged opera.

The Opera for this year is still in negotiation with the National Theatre of Porto: TNSJ and it will be fully announced soon.

Specialty of this module in comparison with other courses in Europe

EOA students will participate in this fully staged work and will receive vocal coaching and acting to prepare the specific roles of this production. It will make the EOA student aware of the full team work and cooperation that an opera production requires, and it will make the singer aware of the interaction of all the EOA Modules 2021-2022, and how different areas are involved in an opera presentation (implementation of the set design, costumes, light, production, staging, orchestra, etc.)
