VIL 1. Suzuki Method of Actor Training

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021

Practical training course of Suzuki Method is recommended for any stage performer. It aims at improving acting, dancing and other performing skills. Suzuki Method of Actor Training was originally created by Tadashi Suzuki and is designed to regain the perceptive abilities and powers of the human body.

Studies include unique theoretical knowledge as well as exploring individual creativity through the rigorous approach to physical training that allows the student to challenge his/her center of gravity by presenting physical obstacles within a given structure. It concentrates on the lover body, legs and feet, giving the student more awareness of the entire body, breath and voice.

STO 4. Opera performance with orchestra and conductor

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021

  • January 13th – April 12th 2020

  • 1 or 2 vocal students

In this module, the student singers work in a production in cooperation with student conductors and musicians from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and a professional stage director.

The project will consist of opera scenes from 2-3 different operas, conceptually merged into one opera performance. The course starts with preparatory work with vocal coaching with our teachers in musical interpretation and the conductor students.

The course also contains language coaching, both individually and in group.

A production period of 6-7 weeks follows, consisting of stage work and orchestral rehearsals leading up to a fully staged performance with lighting, costumes and makeup.

Description of final examination

Students are examined through the staged performance and a subsequent discussion in the group reflecting on how the singer’s performance of a role is influenced by the interaction with other professional groups in a production.

STO 2. Full Opera production

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021

  • Spring semester 2021: 1 March – 7 June 2021

  • 1 or 2 vocal students

This course offers an opportunity to perform an opera role in a full-scale production at Werrmland Opera, an Opera House in Karlstad, in the west of Sweden. The module consists of a period of musical preparation with vocal coaching and interpretation, followed by role analysis and stage rehearsals, led by a professional director and conductor. The performance is produced with orchestra, sets, lighting, costume and make up.

The repertoire will be decided in Autumn 2020

RIG 2. Baroque Opera Studio in Riga

Baroque opera studio – joint module in collaboration with Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Baroque opera production in collaboration with the orchestra Collegium Musicum Riga.

RIG 1. Russian Language in Opera fragments of Russian Composers

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021

  • Autumn semester September 1 – December 23, 2020
  • Spring semester    February 1- June 15, 2021

Russian language phonetics and training in opera fragments of Russian composers /N. Rimski-Korsakov, P. Tchaikovski, S. Prokofiev etc./ together with local students. Daily lessons in Opera studio “Figaro”.

Possibility to participate in rehearsals/performances of “The Queen of Spades” at the National Opera.

Possibility to master Russian language: perception, listening, speaking, reading, communication skills.

In addition EOA students will be offered tailor-made programme:

POR 2. Performance of an Operatic Role in fully staged Opera Production with orchestra

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021

1st of March to 7th July 2021

1-3 vocal students (Soprano, Mezzo, Tenor, Baritone, Bass)

The aim of the Module is for students to work on performing a role and learn to co- operate with conductors, directors and other professional groups through the performances and participation on a fully staged opera.

The Opera for this year is still in negotiation with the National Theatre of Porto: TNSJ. Soon it will be fully announced*

EOA students will participate in this fully staged work and will receive vocal coaching and acting to prepare the specific roles of this production. It will make the EOA student aware of the full team work and cooperation that an opera production requires, and it will make the singer aware of the interaction of all the EOA Modules 2020-2021, and how different areas are involved in an opera presentation (implementation of the set design, costumes, light, production, staging, orchestra, etc.)

Possible extras: Students may attend one, or both, of these theoretical seminars on the subject of Opera and Performance:

  • Opera communication systems in history and in actuality: a sociological approach. Seminar given by Prof. Dr. Mário Vieira de Carvalho – member of the Administrative Counsel of the European Music Theatre Academy and President of CESEM – Center of Sociology and Musical Aesthetics Studies
  • The Psychology of Performance – The underlying psychology to the study of operatic roles and other issues in opera. This Seminar will be given by Prof. Dr. Daniela Coimbra (PhD) – Professor on Psychology of Music, at ESMAE.

Besides that, Porto is a culturally interesting and beautiful city. Here you can profit from the musical and cultural activity at Casa da Música of Porto, a very active cultural point in the city, as well as the Teatro Nacional de São João, Rivoli Theatre and the Coliseum of Porto.

*The Opera suggested by the National Theater is: The Importance of Being Earnest? An Opera by Gerald Barry based on Oscar Wilde´s homonymous Play (but other titles may be suggested and are still in discussion with the São João National Theater.)

Irish composer Gerald Barry’s opera with Oscar Wilde The Importance of Being Earnest was staged for the first time in the UK in June 2013.

PAR 2. Opera buffa in the 18th Century (singers)

Period of the EOA module in 2020-2021

The full, staged performance of this Opera (Title TBA) will take place in May 2021

The EOA students are welcome to join this production during the Spring Semester Erasmus Mobility (from February to June 2021 for Erasmus SMS – Minimum March to May for Erasmus STT)

This module guides the student through a path of vocal and scenic interpretation of one entire opera from eighteenth-century Opera Buffa’s repertoire (Title TBA)

EOA students will participate in this fully staged work and will receive specialized diction, vocal and acting coaching to prepare the specific roles of this production.

  • Analysis, study and full understanding of the libretto/ character/scenes
  • Vocal technique and style coaching in Opera Buffa repertoire.
  • Advanced Italian pronunciation and diction classes.
  • Specific lessons on Recitativo.
  • Individual coaching and group work: vocal and score lessons and group work on Scenic Art (Training of the actor’s body, physical and gestural laboratory).

Classes will be held in Italian and English.

ERASMUS SMS students have to choose other courses (e.g. Poetry for music and dramaturgy, Opera History etc.) among those annually proposed by the Conservatory, to reach the total number of required credits. (Not required for Erasum STT)

Special attention will be given to the study of proper Italian diction and pronunciation with native Italian teachers, in building Opera Buffa characters (both scenic and vocal) with full linguistic and stylistic background. Special concentration on Recitativo.

EXTRA: exchange and collaboration with other students of the Conservatory working on the same production. A unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the rich operatic music culture of the territory, attending places of unique musical interest, within the Conservatory (Musical Section of Libreria Palatina, Boito’s Studio and Toscanini’s Studio) or in the immediate nearby of it (the Library of the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Verdiani, the Museo dell’Opera, the Casa della Musica etc).

This module guides the student through a path of vocal and scenic interpretation of one or more scenes from Verdi’s operas. They are planned as follows:

  • Analysis, study and full understanding of Verdi’s libretto(s) and character(s) chosen.
  • Vocal technique and style coaching in Verdi’s repertoire.
  • Advanced Italian pronunciation and diction classes.
  • Individual coaching and group work: vocal and score lessons, and group work on Scenic Art (Training of the actor’s body, physical and gestural laboratory).
  • Preparation for final exam and concert(s). Classes will be held in Italian and English.

Description of final examination:

Performance    of    an    operatic    full    Verdi    scene    in    front    of    a    jury.    The examination may coincide with a public concert.

Possible extras:

Upon request a little tour of the main “music treasures” of Verdi’s land: the birthplace of Verdi and Villa Sant’Agata, the Toscanini Museum, the world renowned Teatro Regio, the beautiful Teatro Farnese (17th century), the Casa del Suono, etc. Opportunity to join Italian Course lev. A2+B1 in the first semester or English Course level B1 or B2 in second semester. October is the month of the Parma Verdi Festival. Facilities are offered to enrolled students who want to experience a show at the Teatro Regio and/or other planned locations.

  • Individual tuition: 15 h (per semester) + Group work: 45 h (per semester), plus other group lessons, to complete the ECTS required level
