In this Blended Intensive Programme the IUA’s Music department created a workshop to train young opera singers on how to prepare and work on Mozart-ensemble. For this BIP, IUA Reykjavík has worked together with SKH Stockholm and ESMAE Porto.

How is the Blended Intensive programme organised?

The Blended Intensive Programme consists of 3-week virtual component and 1-week Physical activity organised as follows:

Virtual component: 

Online lectures: 1 x week, a total of 3 sessions

  • Week #1 – online lectures: Getting to know the story/caracters. How to prepare?
  • Week #2 – online lecture: Getting to know the style/Mozart. How to sing?
  • Week #3 – online lecture: Getting to know the language. How to sing italian?

Students will get 3-4 online lectures and assignments to prepare before the intensive work-week in Reykjavík. Each participant will work individually on the project as well as in collaboration with with each other. They will get training in character development, and the incorporation of foreign language in opera while working as part of an ensemble. This component also relies on the students forming groups around each scene(project) and collaborating independently online so they can make the most of their learning during the intensive week in Reykjavik.

Intensive Opera Workshop, from 26th to 30th September, 2022

  • Week #4 – Intensive Opera-Workshop in Reykjavik

This Opera-Workshop is about working as you would in an operatheater, re-exploring familiar opera-ensembles and find a way to surprise and challenge ourselfs. This is also an opportunity getting to know each other, getting to know different approaches and culture and  building up collaboration and network. The future aim is that the opera-workshop will become a regular collaboration between music universities in Europe in the years to come.

On-site teaching, preparation in each partner institution

Teaching location: IUA Reykjavík, Skipholt 31, music department, Dynjandi lecture hall

Participants: Students of the IUA singing program as well as at least 15 travelling students from partner schools run by EOA.

  • Exploring the possibilities for basic dramaturgy in the scenes, with the help of movement and improvisation

B. Acting for Singers in the Preparation of Operatic Roles 

The main purpose of this module is to consolidate the performer skills, giving a particular focus to the work on stage in the interaction with the director and the maestro. Issues of scenic presence in relation with the scene/stage will also be explored. Scenic experimentation through body movement, improvisation, vocality and the arousing of emotion will bring the student a new approach to Opera and Opera making. This module will enable the student to experience a live performance in front of an audience.

Specialty of this module in comparison with other courses in Europe

The aim of this section of the module is to facilitate the student’s artistic autonomy both in methodological processes as well as the consolidation of an artistic identity. Through an organization of their knowledge and skills (creative, sensory and cognitive) the student will be able to develop interpretative operatic roles taking in account previous dramaturgic assumptions for the purpose of live performance.

  • Master a variety of techniques of movement and acting.
  • Develop somatic and emotional body-mind approaches to performance practice
  • Increase awareness of the poetic universe of the performer
  • Develop the singular nature of each opera singer during live performance and during collective interaction.

PAR 4. Piano Accompaniment and Opera Coaching (Pianists, Traineeship for pianists)

ERASMUS students (STT) may choose a mobility of minimum 3 maximum 6 months during the academic year 2022-2023

Description

This module offers an entirely specific traineeship for piano accompaniment of voice and opera scenes, designed for pianists who consider a future in the world of opera by adding to their curriculum a first work experience in this various and challenging environment. Trainees will accompany singers on the piano in different settings:

  • singing lessons,
  • scenic interpretation lessons,
  • staging
  • preparation for exams and concerts and during public performances. This always under supervision of a tutor.

The goal is to improve the knowledge of opera repertoire and to practice the specific skills requested.

The trainee will receive weekly tasks from the coordinator of piano accompaniment.

A module for professional pianists who wish to broaden their knowledge of the operatic repertoire in compliance with all the specific attitudes. With a full immersion into Italian opera together with the opportunity to develop the best practice in Italian language applied to opera. To exercise, develop and improve their skills as a pianist in accompanying different voice parts.

Exchange and collaboration with other students of the Conservatory.

A unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the rich operatic music culture of the territory, attending places of unique musical interest, within the Conservatory (Musical Section of Libreria Palatina, Boito’s Studio and Toscanini’s Studio) or in the immediate nearby of it (the Library of the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Verdiani, specialised in 19th century opera and music in general, with particular emphasis on the life and work of Giuseppe Verdi, the Museo dell’Opera, the Casa della Musica, Teatro Regio, etc.).

Upon request a little tour of the main “music treasures” of Verdi’s land: the birthplace of Verdi and Villa Sant’Agata, the Toscanini Museum, the world renowned Teatro Regio, the beautiful Teatro Farnese (17th century), the Casa del Suono, etc. Opportunity to join Italian Course level A2+B1 in the first semester or English Course level B1 or B2 in second semester. October is the month of the Parma Verdi Festival. Facilities are offered to enrolled students who want to experience a show at the Teatro Regio and/or other planned locations.

Description of the module

This module allows to use all potential of vocal and kinaesthetic art in the area of contemporary music including performative arts like improvised singing, dancing and actings. Module 1 is strongly connected with expanding voice and body abilities during and artistic creation. Inspired by postulate of Jerzy Grotowski and his Laboratory Theatre the module will give to the young artist an extraordinary way of creating a role by using all the gamut of stage expression.

The module is dedicated to singers and dancers. It is based on discovering an archetypical primeval intentions and visions as a main factor in creating an artistic performance.

The module includes singing and dance lesson, musical improvisation, movement and dance improvisation, performative arts laboratory, working with piano coach, full breath & body & mind workshop, history of modern music educational programme.

FLO 1. A room with a view on the Italian Belcanto

Period of the EOA module in 2022-2023:

  • January 23rd, 2023 – April 31st, 2023

Meet the Italian Belcanto tradition in the town that hosted the first operatic creation. An all-Italian experience on the operatic repertoire from Baroque to Verdi and Puccini. Voice lessons on style and technique, repertoire study with vocal coaches, Italian language and diction class, Opera class with acting and staging seminars, final concert with semi-staged performance of full operatic scenes.

Study repertoire:

  1. One leading role from an Opera in Italian
  2. A group of 3-4 arias in Italian, including recitativos and/or cabalettas if present and full scenes and ensembles from operas

Specialty of this module in comparison with other courses in Europe

We give the participants the possibility to develop their skills in the Italian language and diction in a very practical approach. We will concentrate on interpretation and performance of the most important Italian belcanto styles, from the early baroque “recitar-cantando”, the classic recitativo secco, accompagnato and virtuoso arias, to the Romantic “solita scena” (scena, aria and cabaletta) until the declamatory style of the late XIX composers (Verismo), depending on each singer vocal and musical needs. Our teachers and coaches have a long experience in the tuition of international students, as in our Vocal studies Faculty more than 50% of singers are from all the continents. Being in Firenze (Dante’s home town) allows you to absorb the good “reference” Italian diction directly from the people you will meet in the street, as the Florentine language is the basis of the modern Italian language.

FLO 2. The Maestro Collaboratore (Vocal coach)

Period of the EOA module in 2022-2023:

  • January 23, 2023 – April 30, 2023

Meet the Italian Belcanto tradition in the town that hosted the first operatic creation. An all-Italian experience on the operatic repertoire from Baroque to Verdi and Puccini. Piano accompanying lesson on style and technique, repertoire study with vocal coaches, Italian language and diction class, Opera class with acting and staging seminars, final concert with semi-staged performance of full operatic scenes.

Study repertoire:

  1. Two Opera vocal scores in Italian, from Mozart to Puccini
  2. A group arias in Italian, including recitativos and/or cabalettas, if present
  3. A group of Italian Art songs

Specialty of this module in comparison with other courses in Europe:

We give the participants the possibility to develop their skills as a vocal coach (maestro collaboratore). Our teachers and coaches have a long experience in the tuition of international students, as in our Vocal studies Faculty more than 50% of students are from all the continents. Being in Firenze (Dante’s home town) allows you to absorb the good “reference” Italian diction directly from the people you will meet in the street, as the Florentine language is the basis of the modern Italian language.

Students from the Academies partners of the EOA consortium will be able to participate with an Erasmus grant for studies or traineeship without any tuition fee.

Participants from any other academy will have to pay a 602,85 enrolment and tuition fee (contract students) before the beginning of the module.

Entrance examination:

Before April 15, 2022, by email erasmus@consfi.it only:

  1. Please, send a link to a recent performance of yours (from not more than 1 year ago) including at least:
  • ONE piano solo piece of free choice or TWO Lieder (or Art Songs) accompanying a singer
  • ONE operatic aria or scene, accompanying a singer
  1. A brief curriculum and a complete list of studied operatic vocal score in Italian (only word or pdf file, please, or link to personal artistic website)

By May 15, 2021, candidates will receive a response about selection. If successfully selected, students will be required to confirm their choice before June 30.

Description of the final Examination:

  • Module: Semi-staged operatic scenes and recital with arias/songs in public concerts at the end of the module
  • Erasmus mobility : each class will award a note of evaluation by the teacher and ECTs

  • We require that EOA students have a minimum B1 Italian language level.
